Lots of water changes, "pre filter sponge" over the intake. bare bottom makes life easier. and java moss tied to a chunk of driftwood = great hiding spot for fry and microorganisms for them to pick at. I keep mine in a planted 10 gallon tank. kinda annoying to vaccum and WC it w/ the gravel. wouldn't say I'm "attached" to the fish.. but it is fun watching the tank sometimes.. before I scoop out a bunch and watch my other fishies go nutters for guppies!
If you want to feed live, imo breeding your own is the best way to go. My Senegal bichirs get a wide variety of food includeing pellets, live, frozen.
also depending on what type of bichirs you're getting. You may want to upgrade to a 20 long and do platies or mollys eventually.
and make sure to feed them a High quality flake.
