I've got 100 ramshorn snails on order so that I can breed them to feed to my puffers. The only experience I have with snails is putting them in my puffer tank as food.

I was planning on keeping and breeding the snails in a 2.5 gallon tank with a sponge filter and feeding algae wafers. Do I need to heat the tank or will heating the tank make them breed faster? Also I know they will lay their eggs on the glass but should I put some decorations in there for them?

I'm just trying to get as many snails as I can as fast as possible because the puffers find them delicious. I would appreciate any snail breeding tips anyone has.

Thanks

i am no expert on snails but i bought 3 back in December and now have about 20 good size ones and about 200 baby's. i would suggest a temp of 78-80F a few live/plastic plants a well cycled sponge filter, strong light ( i use a desk lamp, and i let the sun hit the tank for day once in a while to help keep the algae up). I would feed them flake as it will sink to the bottom and they wont all be crowding on one piece of food( i use both, mostly flake tho). i also put 1 large ghost shrimp in the tank so he eats any of the snails that happen to die.

i put 4-8 in my fry net b/c i tend to over feed a lot and they keep it very clean..... this is also were most of 200+ babys are.
