Anyone have any expierience breeding Salvini, I thought I might give it a shot. I'm assuming they dont breed as easy as cons as I have bred these before and you dont really have to do anything special to get them to go at it. Anything special recomended? How easy do they tend to breed? Anyone with any insight or expierience?

I think its easy, since my female salvini tried and is still trying to breed with everything in any of my tanks, including a kenyi. Successfully bred a salvini with a green texas. I didnt do anything to get it going either, it just happened.

Cool,

Do you think my pair would be ok breeding in with an Oscar and a JD? or would their own tank be better for breeding purposes? I know they get along with the other fish or at least tolerate each other anyway. When I've bred other fish I just leave the fry in and let the tankmates clean up the mess. But I think I want to extract these and grow them out...

With sexing, I was told the black blotch on the gill plate and more red would indicate female, as the male would have less distinguished black and red markings. Would this be the best way?

Very aggressive fish even as pairs. When the female is ready to breed, she will get the male's attention and only then they will tolerate each other (I only introduce the female when she is ripe). After breeding, the female will stay near the eggs/fry and is very aggressive towards the male. I would advise separating them at this point (and you can pull out the eggs/fry to raise separately). They quarrel a lot at this time and the male can turn on the female also.

Great, Thank you for the information, I will try to set it up and follow your advice. Hopefully get some nice fry!!!!!

I've always had success breeding my pair in a community tank. When fry is free swimming, I separate the female and fry from the community tank. When I see that the fry starts to bother the female, I put the female back in the community tank.

Sounds good, thanks for the info, I was debating on removing the female and the fry as well

The blotch is actually on the dorsal fine. But they tend to have more yellow and green as the males tend to have more of the green/blue speckles.
