I had a 40gal open, and my salvini was constantly harassing my jag and JD in my 100gal. I decided to plop the salv into the 40gal, and I'm looking at a female salv at my LFS. They both have great coloration and I think they'll do well together. (Hopefully)

What's some steps I can do to get the two to breed, assuming they pair up (here's hoping!)

add some pots and keep the temp at 78-80 and lots of hiding places

no direct experience at breeding - - I have owned male and female salvinis, but not at the same time - - but every source I have read indicates that breeding is problematic because the males can get violent; i.e., dead females are not uncommon, and in a 40G, I don't think you can have enough hiding places

if you decide to proceed, do so with caution, maybe use a divider . . .

I went and picked up the female today. She already had breeding colors the moment she came out of the bag. The male is still pissy cause he got taken out of the bigger tank.

I've placed several pots, aswell as removed most of the plants that were in the tank. There's three left, surrounded by large boulder-type rocks. The ph is at like 6.2 (lots of plants / driftwood.)

She's not doing well right now (long ride home), I managed to snap a few pictures of her and I'll upload them soon.

Hopefully she'll pickup in activity.

lets see the pic :)

Male (5")

Female 4"

She's not doing well still.

Note, new lights in the tank; it makes it very yellow with the stained water from the driftwood. It doesn't need a water change, params are fine.

Two hours in the tank. Instant match!

EDIT: About ten minutes after htis post, I noticed the male chasing her a little bit. Not in an aggressive way. She went into a clay pot for nearly for about five minutes and circled around. I'm expecting good things.

is a ph of 6.2 appropriate? these are CA cichlids . . . I would think they'd do better at 7.0 or higher

I'm not trying to be critical; I'm genuinely curious, 'cuz I think that is a very low ph for salvinis . . . (?)

I miscalculated my ph, sorry, I was just talking to someone about my African tank. The Africans are at 6.2 and the Salv's are at a harder ph. (I misunderstood myself.)
