Hi Johny,
i've not often read about breeding of bichirs (in relation to cichlids or others), but if i've read about senegalus often was subject ...
I have a pair of P.senegalus since several years, the last two years i could watch courtship, this year i could watch real breeding. This was approx. two months ago, but there are some indices that this breeduíng wasn't a one-time-action ... i think they had made "it" some more times in this period.
The most important things were said by Anne, our Queen of bichir knowledge (worldwide i think 'cause i had never read so much informations about bichirs!).
But i want to talk about some personal experience relating to the breeding of P.senegalus ...
Courtship often led in by partial water changes - but this will not cause real breeding. The male wants, the female wants NOT (as we know about humans) ...
Due to the real breeding i had complete new terms in the tank they are living in: My plants were growing more rapidly as ever - i didn't make any water changes over the time of 4(!!!) months! But the chemistry of the water was OK anymore ...
But the new terms - an underwater jungle - had a handicap: I could not pick up any eggs! When i realized that my sens were breeding i had to watch that my ornate and weeksi also had realized the event - but much earlier than me! They were waiting directly under the anal fin of the male - waiting for the opening when the eggs went their way ... the sens had shown a smart behaviour: The breeding happened directly over a rich rooted Anubias - but especially the ornate went crazy to get ALL eggs and dashed wildly into these roots causing a fog of all other substances hiding in these roots.
I only saw the eggs for a short time - never any larvae ... the presence of optimized predators didn't allow any survivors.
Greetings
Uwe
