Hey guys so do snails bred for food actually need calcium? I some pond snails and ramshorn snails in a 20 gallon planted tank. There is a lot of algea in there they can eat as well as fish food that is left over. The tank is also home to a 2-2.5inch Serra Rhom. I was not sure if the snails needed calcium blocks or something like that in there or not. I would prefer not to, because I was concerned it may buffer the water hardness or leach something that would be bad for the piranha. Is it ok if I do not give them calcium, or do they need it?

I throw a calcium pill in once a month. The kind people take from the vitamin store. I raise Japanese trap door snails for my fahaka.

I wouldn't think it would hurt the rhom as long as you aren't throwing in 20 a week. as rodger said, 1 a month won't hurt anything.

Awesome thanks guys! But yes I do have one a 20gallon. Until recently it was a 3inch Rhom, but I just moved him to a 40breeder and now I have a 1.5inch elong in the 20

Look up Amber's Snail jello, iit will feed your snails but won't change your tank chemistry.
