I hate to ask a breeding African cichlid question in the regular breeding section. No offense to guppy breeders, but you may not know cichlids.

I have some male and female sunshine peacocks all at this time in a 125g with other peacocks. I would like to pull the two females, before they get to mating age, out a put them in separate tank and plop in a nice male for some breeding fun. :D (also to not have peacock hybrids.) What is the smallest tank could I get a way with for the two mothering females? I would have a another tank to raise the fry.
Also, by the way, all the tanks would be put in to a system of tanks sharing a common filter.

How are you sure that you're able to tell which females are the sunshines and which are the other species of peacocks? Even after spending time in Malawi I still have a very hard time differentiating different species of females. If you're sure, you might be able to get away with a 3' 33, though a 3' 54 (18" wide) or 4' tank would be better in the long run. The sunshines should stay smaller as well, and females could be breeding by the time they're 2". That male does have more red tinge than I'd expect for a sunshine though, should much more yellow.

I did not breed them, I bought the sunshines all from same LFS at different times. Those two females are really easy to pick out in my tank. there are no others even close to them in size or color.
thanks for your response on tank size.

Most every female Aulo are very drab and have no color. They resemble eachother so much that usually you can't tell the difference. That is why many people advise against mixing the Aulos because they easily will cross breed.

I'm no expert but are you sure he is a sunshine looks a lot like a red just asking since you expressed that you did not want hybrids?

Good eye, cdf_1873. I screwed up when uploading the picture. The thumbnail was hard to see. the new picture is of the two male sunshines, big and little, with the red also in the pic.
Thanks for the careful eye.
