Ok so im thinking of breeding tilapia in a 55g...think thats big enough? Im not so sure i could fit more than one pair in there...and do i really need to cover the tank floor with gravel/sand? Or is that just aesthetics? Thanks for the input...even though this is a cliche question..

What kind of Tilapia were you thinking of? Some need much more space than others....

Anyways, rather keep it one pair to a tank. You're much safer doing that. You don't need much in the tank for them to breed, and they knock so much stuff around anyway. Just keep it to the basics: gravel. A plastic plant won't hurt, but it won't stay in one spot for long.

If you can, try to get equipment that sits outside of the tank as well. It just helps a little lol :)

I see..theyre oreochromis mossambicus, i think...so gravel or sand IS necessary?
