Recently decided to breed my flowerhorns, first batch of eggs from my 2 srds came out duds. Gonna try with the same male another 2-3 times, any tips?

Honestly best thing ya can do is keep trying, took my FH's about 4 tries before they finally got it right. Keep temps up around 80°f at most and use cool water when giving water changes. Also don't be surprised if one or both of the parents turn out to be infertile. Also I find that using sand with a few big slate rocks helps, it allows the pair to bond over cleaning the slate rock off of sand. O also a major thing is don't have the breeding area next to the filter intake as all that does is just sucks up all the sperm the male produces and prevents the eggs from getting fertilized.

Hope this all helps and that someone else may chime in with their own tips and tricks.

Welcome to MFK.
I’ve not spawned flowerhorn but I have spawned several other types of big cichlids.
If the pair is getting along and bonded congrats that’s the first big hurdle.
Provide the cleanest water you can, feed good quality foods.
Provide a couple different spawning sites.
Do larger more frequent water changes.
All this will help get them to spawn again.
If they are spawning it just depends on their fertility and practice.
Try to be patient.

Also, don't rule out the eggs until they're all done. Sometimes the males may be fertile but lacking in the coverage department. I have 2 growouts from a spawn of about 300 eggs. Could be a maturity thing, could be that's all he's packing. I haven't tried again since to see if he's shooting better or not.

I agree, this has happened to me. Female may lay a huge spawn of eggs but you could see whole lines of eggs that weren’t fertilized or maybe were just bad eggs.
I tend to think it was the males problem though.

Would feeding shrimp and live foods before breeding work for conditioning instead of pellets? How long can I wait before breeding again 2 weeks or a month?
