breeding tubes

i see some people post pics of there fish and close ups of the breeding tube sticking out. I thought this only happend during breeding. Does the tube stick out all the time on your fish??? I have kept a lot of cichlids and only seen the tube on the ones that bred. Just wondering if you guys know something that i don't that makes the tube stick out??

My Blood Parrot and Super Red Texas keep their tubes out at all times. So does my male convict, but everyone else hides theirs til spawning behavior begins.

Only seen them when the fish are in breeding mode.
