My umbee has laid eggs twice now but within a few days the parents eat the eggs. they are only 5 or so inches, so they are young parents. Is this normal. whenever any of my past cichlids breed they where always fertile and hatched. Anybody have experience with this?

saometimes they never grow out of eating the eggs... If you want to grow out the fry then i suggest waitin at least 24 hrs after spawn before removing eggs to allow them to form outer shell. but definitely remove them if you want survivors. good luck.

Hi, I made an account just to reply here...
Okay I'm not sure how much you've witnessed in your Umbees mating.
BUT, I have 2 doviis, and my female won't let the male withing 6 inches of the eggs. Sooo, the female picks the eggs off 1 by 1, as the eggs rot or die from being unfertilized.

My male dovii is either too immature to fertilize, or my female just won't let him.
Anyway, eventually she picks off all the eggs, 1 by 1. Throughout a 3 or 4 day span.

Hi there, it is normal for cichlids to eat their eggs/forget about them/eat their fries/destroy their spawn site in the first few tries, many will take a while to get the hang of it. Don't worry until it's like the 5th or 6th try, and then start worrying a bit. :)

My Ellioti + Convict pair took 5 tries to get it right, but then I accidentally introduced a different female Convict and he went for her instead, got it on the second try. :) So yeah don't worry too much, especially since they're still small.
