what size of tank would you reccomend for doing this?.. . my budget is £200 or $320 dollars. . ive always wanted zebra pleco's and to breed fish also. .so i figured these fish were a good choice due to there value and the challenge of breeding them also. . or maybe i should get another mannie and try and breed them haha jk

zebra plecs top fish but for a budget of £200 you might find it hard to start a breeding group, they dont need a massive tank, alot to do with the water and temp to get them to breed. even very young fish are going for £80 each around here.

Assuming you're buying a group of mature adults, a small breeding group alone is going to run you more than twice your budget. If you are on a budget, I would recommend one of the cheaper striped hypans-- perhaps L333 or L66, both of which are being bred with frequent success by keepers around the world.

or even buy them over time. . like 400 worth. . then 1 fish a month. . would it be best to get something like 4 females and 2 males?

My brother has 4 that he is trying to grow out to breed. He is keeping in them in a 40 gallon breeder (wide), and all they do is hide in the caves 99% of the time, so I think anything above a 40 gallon breeder would be fine.

Ive got 6 of them, not too sure how many males and female, but like wonword said they hide 99% of the time, its sort of a waiting game. Im thinking of changing the tank, maybe put less hiding places so i can see them more. but they are not like regular plecos , they dont eat algea. good luck with it anyways

Ive got a group of 10 adults and like most hypans, L46 do spend
most of their time hiding. There's a saying "a hiding zebra is a healthy zebra." if you're looking for a fish that is visible, these are not for you. It takes a special-- a slightly crazy-- hobbyist to keep these fish
