Hey need some advise!! A pair of reds in my tank have for the second time laid some eggs. How can i insure that they make it? The first time the pleco ate them i think, so this time i am going to take him out! Should i put the eggs into another tank to hatch? If so when? How do i know if the male did his thing over the eggs? Let me know THANKS!

I don't know too much about breeding, but I know you should take the eggs out and put them in another tank. You probably want to use a turkey baster or something like that to take out the eggs. Not much more i could tell you, but I'm sure someone else will add somemore info for you.

The eggs if fertilized properly should be orangish in colour and be covered in a thick layer of milt. The fry will start to hatch within 48 hours. The best way to have them hatch is to have them removed to a holding tank. Be sure to remove the white infertile eggs so they do not spread a fungus over to the fertilized eggs. Once the fry begin hatching they will pop their tails out through the eggs sacks, creating a spinning motion. FOR HATCHING AND RAISING FRY A FEW SUPPLIES ARE REQUIRED
Equipment:
1. 10 gal holding tank;
2. sponge filter;
3. Air pump & airline (any size air pump will work fine);
4. Air stone (a three inch airstone works fine);
5. Heater 100 watts;

make sure you take the water out of the tank, dont use fresh water. feed them brine shrimp, you can get them off ebay and at most local fish stores, you have to hatch them so it may be too late for this batch, you can try feeding them crushed flake or pulverized fillett. www.dontgointhewater.com has some good tips on the brine shrimp and breeding.

by the way im gonna be jealous as hell if you get frye, ive had a lot of eggs, no fry

Where the hell is import racer when i need him? Anyways fellas thanks for the quick response you helped me a lot? A few more questions? How warm should i keep the tank if fry hatch? and by sponge filter you mean the type of filtration that sits like a backpack on the back of the tank with a whiteish sponge in it? won't the filter suck in the fry? and what if i have a 29 gallon alreaddy setup and running. . . it is my medical tank when necessary but i haven't used it for that in years. Did i say thanks for helping?

To stop a filter sucking up fry, out some pant-hoes (not sure of spelling) over the in tank.
I would also suggest no gravel in the fry tank, just for easy of cleaning and observing.
Thing with a tank the size of 29 gallons is, it will be harder for the fry to find the food.
Keep the temperature a few degrees higher than their parents’ tank.

Also, two plants i would really recommend.
Firstly java moss for all types of fry. They are able to retreat into it and find microscopic food sources in it. Secondly some sort of floating plant, for as the young grow, like in the wild, they use the leaves and roots of floating plants to feel secure and safe. They will also block out light.

Sorry, some very stupid mistakes in my typing there.
Here is the revised version of that reply:

A sponge filter is a filter that sits on the bottom of the tank with an airline going to it. their is a spong e that is inside or wraps around it.

So the eggs for sure hatched. Their tiny tails were wiggling all about so i sucked them up with a hydra cleaner and transfered them into the 29. They still have yet to plunge out of the egg but they trying their hearts out. I'd say that there are at least 100 of these bad boys. I'm afaraid that i might have damaged some of them in the transfer. if some of the newborn eggs wiggled themselves under the gravel will they find their way out? It's my first time as a parent to fry so i'm a bit in the dark on the matter so any comments will help, thanks fellas!!!

I know a guy who has had success feeding the fry on very, very finey ground lean red meat.
