I've got a male and female Breidohri and the male doesn't seem interested in breeding for whatever reason.

About 7-8 months ago, they laid eggs and the male ate the eggs. Since then, every 3-6 weeks the female goes into breeding colors and gets her black bearding but the male does not. I've even seen her tube distend but have never seen a second batch of eggs.

Is there anyone with experience breeding these fish? Should I be doing something specific to help induce them to breed? The male is probably somewhere around 7" now, and the female maybe 4-4.5".

I haven't really bred fish before, except for some convicts years ago, so I'm pretty new to the whole thing. Is it common for CA/SA cichlids to have 1 fish go into full breeding colors on it's own?

Any help or information on breeding them would be much appreciated.

PS: Don't hit me too hard on the tank, I just got done moving, and the tank is fighting algae (diatoms) being in the garage and getting direct sunlight. The move also wasn't very kind on the Anubias. This was right before I cleaned the tank, in retrospect should've probably waited to take the pictures until after I got done cleaning.

I've never bred them myself, but I imagine the issue is the same as when it happens with other cichlids. The male simply just wasn't ready to breed or just doesn't know what he's doing yet. Just gotta keep taking care of them and wait it out because there really isn't anything that you can do to "fix" him and show him how to fertilize eggs instead of eating them, lol.

Maybe introduce some competition? Another pair? Idk, you'd have to have a good sized tank for that.

Mine spawned many times, so to me it sees odd that the male wouldn't go for it. And yes those are female breeding colors.
Usually with mine a few large water changes would get them going, something like a 50% one every other day for a week or so to mimic seasonal change, in their natural habitat.

I never bred or even kept SA/CAs before, but when a male cichlid is not interested in his mate, the answer usually to add some dithers to get him to be a little more protective. Boesmani or another big rainbow or giant danios or something like that are fast and tough enough to live in a tank with some pretty nasty fish, but are not really capable of doing damage. I have never seen Breidohri before, but that male is beautiful. He looks like a sky blue Midas. Makes me sort of want SA/CA, but they are just not for me any time in the foreseeable future.

That is one stunning male wow very nice. Maybe do a water change with perhaps a bit colder water bc it resembles rain water helps them get frisky, I've read that somewhere on this forum
