Has anyone had these fish? I know they aren't very popular in the hobby, but I kind of like them. For those of you who own them, how do they do in a community tank? Also, does anyone know how to sex them?

i used to have a very nice pair of them and i sold it to code9 located in california...males would tend to have a bigger hump on head, wider body, and longer fins...females are the opposite....females will turn black/pale white when breeding...i've had them in a 125gal. community tank with other cichlids such as bourcoti's, pearsi's, and other breidorhis....they make great parents...temperant is semi aggressive and not too bad while breeding in a community tank....had bred 3 batches I believe but sold em' all about 7-8 months ago. very nice fish...one of my fav's definetly. good luck with them

I've got a mated pair and a 3rd wheel in a 150 gal tank with Paraneetroplus gibbiceps, and some Madagascans, a larger pair of Paretroplus kieneri

and a group of smaller Paretroplus dambabe. Even when the breids spawn, it doesn't get too chaotic. They have in the past been housed with xCichlasoma festae and Parachromis motaguense and held their own.
I believe the female is on the left

They are young, only about 5" , had them less than a year. They came from Ken Davis.
I've had a few spawns already, they started spawning very soon after getting them
BTW They are / can be jumpers.

I think i have your old pair's fry. I keep them with some jd's, and ebjd's. they are not very aggressive

if you got em from code9 than yes...if you see how adults look like you would want to get some, but when they are small they tend to look very plain to me but give it some time and they will turn out looking very very nice... :)
