I'm looking at getting an African tiger fish (H. brevis). Does anyone here have experience with these fish? I heard they max out at about 30 inches, so I'm thinking about building a tank that's 8 feet long, 4 feet wide, and 2 feet deep- is that enough space? I'd like to go smaller if i can. Either that, or a metal framed swimming pool. So, what, how much, and how often should they be fed? Thanks in advance for the help!

brevis are not currently in the trade as far as i know. an 8x4 should be sufficient for a forskalli or a vittatus african tiger. goliath may need more space than this. metal framed pool wouldnt be a good idea unless u have some way to cover it, these fish jump.

Not very many of these in the hobby but there are a few... 2 that I know of local in SoCal and one I read here on the forum over seas (forgot where but im thinking UK in a blue background tank is all I remember).

Maybe the SoCal guy (not going to mention user names) can post a pic or 2... guessing its 12"+ by now :D

But doesn't H. vittatus get to about 3 1/2 feet long? I'm just not sure if a fish if that size would be happy in an 8 by 4 foot tank? How deep would the water need to be, and how would I go about doing tank maintenance without getting torn up by the fish?

yea in the wild they can reach these sizes, in captivity dont think so.

But my last question is my primary concern-if I got a tiger fish, how would I go about vacuuming the gravel and stuff without getting attacked?

You sound very new to ATF and maybe new to preds... Do more research on the ATF using the search engine... You'll get most of your Q's w/an answer :)

G/L, they are a great species to own
