I've read everywhere that brichardi, when kept in groups, do best in a species only tank...think: Brichardi death squad...they have some pretty decent teeth for their size...look like vampires up close...

My question is any of you that have kept them before with tankmates, which ones did you keep and did it work out long-term? I've seen Brichardi with fronts and other larger tangs but the tank isn't large enough for one of them so the smaller tangs are really my only options. Shelldwellers?

Never tried them w/shellies
I have mine w/ other tangs, a couple of Malawis, cats and plecos.

How big is your tank?

37 gallons...so like I said...any large to medium sized tangs/malawi are out of the question.

I'm ok with a species only though...its very cool when they start spawning. My old tank with Brichardi had multiple family groups and it was cool to see them stick together.

in Mandalay Bay's shark reef aquarium they have a 750g Tanganyika tank and made the mistake of putting in a few Brichardi....now they have a 750 gallon Brichardi tank :ROFL::ROFL:

pics have been posted a few times before pretty much in any Vegas aquariums thread.

Good luck with whatever you try if you had something to eat the fry like calvus and compresssiceps then maybe you could have like a male and 2 females or so...

That's pretty funny...altough I can't say I'm surprised in the least.

At the Baltimore aquarium, there is a fairly large Tang tank where a single, very large frontosa (I'd say anywhere from 14-16") lives while surrounded by what appears to be thousands of brichardi adults, juvies, and fry. I wonder if his days were numbered...or he just was in there for "population control"....

I've kept Daffodill's (very similar to Brichardi) with Yellow Labs. In fact it was a planted tank with Yellow Labs and Tiger barbs. The Daffodill's bread a lot but the Yellow Labs and Barbs kept the population in check...

My Daf. population got large by starting with 3 in a 15 gallon tank with 4 tiger barbs. The were down to two when one jumped out. The two bred and bred and bred. The older babies guarding the younger. Then I got a 55 gallon and some yellow labs. Dropped them all in together. Was a great tank for years....The Labs would breed and a few survived but the population stayed manageable.
