n.c.
i recently decided to try africans. i have 4 brichardi in a 29 gallon hopeing they will start to breed when they get a little bigger they are 1 to 2in. right now. i have read they can become quite mean when breeding, hence the death squad thing. dose any one know of any african cat fish that would go ok with them? thanx sean

I'm not sure about a catfish. You might try an upside-down cat (or three) but in a 29 there is barely enough territory for one pair as it is. 2 breeding males will not share that small a space, I can tell you that from experience.
They are most aggressive while spawning. A cat would have a very good chance of eating most, if not all, fry - therefore making the worst aggression shortlived but being that it would happen so often I doubt it would be worth the stress is caused the catfish either way.

I know what you mean, I thought I was going to put them in my 125g Afraican cichlid tank. But after seeing them breed in action, I do not think so. As far as other fish, I had a common pleco in there with them in a 29g. they would relentlessly pick on him. Even though they have tough armor I pulled him out. Now I only have 2 Giant danios with them. they are so fast, that they can not touch them. It drives the birchadi crazy. Birchardi are amazing parents.
The syno cat would probably get some of the fry at under the cover of night.
But i do not know if it is a good idea, it is only a 29g. maybe if a lot of hiding places. I mean a lot. or a bigger tank.

With 4 brichardi in 1 29 I would say once they start pairing off you will have no 1 pair only quickly... As for something like a syno cat I would highly suggest a big negative on that.

(I have seen 75 gallon tanks not big enough for any other fish to get along with a brichardi pair.)

Like above, The tank is on the small side. Once a pair forms, leave just them and allow them to breed and make a colony. Have seen a tank of only brichardi generations and it was pretty cool.

Yeah they are very defensive if they spawn & you don't have much time before they do as they like convicts can breed at 2-3" so get another tank soon; especially if the fish are strangers if they are used to each other they will probaly mob any other fish in the tank. No matter hwat a bigger tank is needed.

from experience, you will end up with 1 pr. I had 2 pr that lasted about 3 months then 1 pr disappeared. 1 floated up out the cave and no sign of the other.

Brichardi are pretty clean fish so a Syno isnt really needed. but if ya want a nice one go for Mulitpunctatus, they are tan with lack dots and white tipped fins.
