I've kept brichardi and a green terror before, but none of these other fish. I was hoping someone might know something about their typical disposition and behavior.

I am switching my 50 gal over to new fish. I want Neolamprologus brichardi(3), Pseudotropheus demasoni(1-2), and a green terror or electric blue jack(1). I'm also considering a Altolamprologus calvus(1). In a previous experience, the terror got along fine with a group of breeding brichardis. I want to breed brichardis again, but only for enjoyment, so really the larger fish are for population control. I plan to buy them at the same time.

There are lots of porous rocks and silk plants in the tank for smaller fish to hid, but there's also plenty of swimming room. We plan to upgrade to a larger tank when we buy a home in a couple years.

Thanks for your help,
Robin

You can have all those fish in one tank. But i would just stick with African cichlids. The green terror and the EBJD will fight.

Well the fish you listed besides the green terror and ebjd would work well. The gt and ebjd would need softer water as the africans would prefer harder. I know people who mix south/central american cichlids w/ african cichlids with minimal issues. If i had to choose between the gt or ebjd i would go for the gt. Ebjd have a fair mortality rate and i think the stress of breeding fish or hard water would kill it. Gt are a lot hardier but would need to be upgraded to a larger tank.

As Midas Madness said, ditch the SA's. I'd also consider ditching the Demasoni as they are far more aggressive than the Brichardi and Calvus.

Ps. demasoni do not do well in groups less than 14. They will end up killing each other. Well I suppose if you only have 2 to start with, at most you will lose 1. :) But yeah either go with African rift or ditch 'em. -Brichardi and Calvus should be nice.

I have kept Brichardi and found them to be super aggressive, especially if 2 of them pair up. They made life miserable for the other tank mates including my 3 M. Aratus. I gave them to my brother and he put them in with a Frontosa colony in a 125g and only the largest fronts were not harrassed. I then tried the Neolaprologus Pulcher (Dafodill) and forund them a little better and a much nicer looking fish.

I wouldnt make that mix, keep down to one locality. Id go for a few more bricardi, they are relatively peaceful fish. Not hard to breed either and they dont tend to eat their young. Demasoni arent all that agressive, id go for a group of say 6-8", not too hard to breed again with them being a mouth brooding species and theres a large market for good quality young demasoni. Calvus should be ok, they arent a fast growing species and dont get too large, they are relitivly mellow, dont go looking for trouble. Rather reserved and timid fish. Although they may eat fry with them being a predator species.

Ditch the Terror and dempsey, come from wrong area, too agressive and different water parametres. Id use ocean rock and coral sand as decor and maybe a few hardy plants such as valis, java fern etc... Maybe also add a few other small peaceful species, you;d also be ok with a few shell dwellers in there, maybe neolamprilogus tetracanthus?

I put a green terror in with my africans once due to an emergency in another tank and he ate two of my demasoni.
