Bricks

Red brick? Hard to say. Different manufacturers have their own formulas. Obviously they don't dissolve, but they can give off toxic chemicals.

Get some slate from LFS or landscaping store.

Old school bricks made by bakingclay are safe, but in the US that process has changed dramatically to include the use of a variety of chemicals. As Dr Joe siad, different manufacturers will use different chemcials, although I doubt any of them are meant to be "for potable use" or to that standard...

I peronsally use "CUT ROCK" as brick. This is natural formed rock that has been extracted from tbhe ground and cut into brick like pieces. I've been using it for quite a few years with absolutely no issues.

Where do you find this?

Pricing?

I get mine at Charles Luck Stone (aka Luck Stone Corporation) which is a Rock Supply Yard with locations up and down the East Coast. I would imagine many other Stone Yards have the same thing...

I go there about once a year and collect what I consider a TON of pieces that are just the right size for my tanks. Most of these pieces they consider broken or scrap. They also consider my pile of rocks a very small pile. I’ve gone at least 5 times and every time I have been given the rock for free. I actually went this week and got a bunch for a friend and I… as usual it was given to me for free…

The pieces I choose are the smaller / broken pieces that they usually sell by the ton. I’m usually told there is no way for them to price such a small amount, so just take it… naturally I have to show up with a smile and a friendly attitude…

To show appreciation I stop in every December and drop off a toy for their toy drive…

Hmmm maybe I need to pull the bricks out my pond. I have 3 redish bricks in my 300gal pond for some hiding breeding spots for the rosey reds I have in there.

I fyou get older bricks that have no holes or what is known as sand cast bricks they are not made with chemicals. They are the most durable but also the most expensive and the least likly to leach off toxins.
