I am using a current nova T5 HO light for a few plants

or

is it fine???

What size is the tank? Or how tall is it?

I think yes. But as long as there is a shady spot where he can hide in relative darkness it should be fine. I dont have any plants currently. I only put the lights on for about 2 hours per day and he hides for those two hours.

id get some kind of floating plant just to make sure its not overkill

piranhas do like dim light better, but they can adjust to bright over time but how bright, I have no idea.
just provide some area with shades or build some kind of "cave" so it can hide if the light is too bright.

Fully agree. T5 lighting is bright and on a 90g it'll light it up pretty good. Id try to shade a section of the tank with some live plants with that type of light.
