Hi
Ever since I been in the hobby(70's) I always have wanted a large tans containing these. One of the most rememberable tank I have seen was on in a restaurant probably 150 gallons or so with just brim and some sort of plants, stunning at the very least. Anyone who have kept these do they get along?. Do you have to have a chiller? Are they as messy as a lot of cichlids are( ie what the bio-load). Have you been as happy with yours as with normal monsters ie oscars, dempseys etc. Any details would be appreciated. I got out of the hobby about thirteen years ago and now I am pulling my tanks from storage with a little of my wife's blessing. I have alway thought this could be as stunning as any freshwater or saaltwater set-up. Thanks for any info.

Common names can be tricky. Where I'm from 'brim/bream' and 'perch' both refer to sunfish (genus Lepomis). There is also the yellow perch (Perca flavescens). I haven't kept yellow perch, but I've kept several different sunfish species, and they are great fish- colorful, active, with lots of 'personality' and interesting behaviors.

Sunfish do not need a chiller. They do great at room temperature, and are not picky about pH or hardness. They are big eaters, just like oscars and other cichlids, so they need robust filtration.

Most sunfish species are aggressive, so be sure to keep that in mind when stocking them. If you have kept aggressive CA cichlids, you will know what to expect. There are many different species, and some are more peaceful than others.

Be sure to check your state fish and game regs to see if you can legally keep native fish. I believe you can in MO, but I'm not 100% certain.

What size tank are you thinking of keeping them in?

I started keeping Natives about 6 months or so ago now, and have found them, so far to be the most enjoyable fish ive ever kept. I have 3 tanks running right now, with various sunfish. I have pumpkinseed, orange spotted, dollar, blue spotted obesus, blackbanded, warmouth, and various darters. They are extremely easy to care for, make no more mess than lots of chiclids i have kept, and i just basically enjoy them more. Plus, i can go out and catch with hook, or net, lots of them for free, enjoy nature, and get good exercise. It would also be nice if you could find a buddy to go with you, and get him or her (Wife) :) to enjoy that quality time as well.

Thanks guys
I have some 75 gallons tank and a 150. Sound like I might be better keeping a couple of 75s than one larger one. I am interested in the brim(yellow bellied) and the perch ( a orange-red belly fish) as they were called when I was in Alabama. I alway have thought these to be one of the prettiest fish.

IN MY EXPERINCE YOULL BE FINE AND FAR AS THE BIO-LOAD GOES I THINK THEY ARE EASIER THEN CICHLIDS A SPECIALLY OSCAR'S

BRIME I CALL THEM BLUE GILLS AND IVE HAD THEM WITH LMB.SMB.ROCK BASS,WHITE PERCH.YELLOW PERCH,RED BELLY SUNNIES,GREEN SUNNNIES,PICKERAL,AND PUMPERNICKELSUNNIES.
