2 of my 3 ray tanks all have fine gravel in them and none of the rays seem to pick on the others. Lately my tank without fine gravel there are a couple leos that seem to just go around biting the tail and the disk of the other rays just for the fun of it, like when two kids are bored and just start picking at each other. So I introduced some fine gravel in the tank 3 days ago and the biting has stopped so far. The rays seem preoccupied just blowing in the sand. Not sure if this will last but makes you wonder how bored they are in bare bottom situations.

So much debate on this subject. I like bare bottom for QT reasons, but I don't like the way they look. Like you said with the rays blowing in the gravel, bare bottoms take away that natural behavior.

sounds like you've been successful. stick with the fine gravel

personally i prefer bare bottom.. but it's only because i feel maintenance is easier..

BB is much easier for water chem. & maintenance but one cant deny that sand makes for a happier ray IMO. If one does go BB then a bubble wand would at least help the boredom of the ray....

The barebottom was also easier for me and the looks didn't bother me. I did have a bubble wand in there and some dither fish but I guess that wasn't enough for them. Just figured I'd share the reaction of my rays to the addition of fine gravel.
Good to hear barebottom is working out for other people, me not so lucky.

Sorry for the double post

SUBSTRATE ALL THE WAY

no matter how many discussions you have on this subject some people will have substrate some wont its as simple as that

you can hear all the goods and bads about both

but for me substrate is no harder to keep clean than a bare bottom tank it maybe easyer to keep clean if you have different fish apart from rays but if their are rays in a tank with substrate they turn it over all the time meaning their is no mess if your filtration is good enough
