hey taz. when i asked you what kind, i just hoped you knew. i think there are over 50different sp. of bristlenose so it might be kinda hard to identify. just so you know, looks good. all i know for sure is thats a male and itll be some kind of Ancistrus sp. maybe Ancistrus cirrhosus as this tends to be quite common.
Unfortunately, confusion has abounded (and continues to do so) with regards to identifying Ancistrus to the species level. The issue has been complicated by hobbyists attaching various, seemingly randomly chosen, scientific names to nearly every Ancistrusspecies imported. The most commonly abused scientific names being A. cirrhosus, A. temminicki, and A. dolichopterus. While the majority of wild caught Ancistrus species are difficult to impossible to identify, the situation has become slightly better over the years. http://www.planetcatfish.com/shanesworld/314.PHP this is a good article you might want to read
the sp. ancistrus starry night is in the picture shown below. there is also http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/loricari/ancistru/221_F.PHP which is commonly called the starrylight bristlenose. i dont think its either of these. however, as common names are, i have seen the pleco you have sold as a starry night, which i guess is wrong if its assigned to a specific pleco, but there you go- another example of crap common names.
I have noticed that BN have taken the market by storm as of recently. There is a shop up in Spokane that had 2 nice 8"+ BNs. If I were into that kind of pleco still I would probably have gotten one or two.
