How long does it take for the Bristles to grow on a Bristle nose Pleco? I bought a "bristlenose" from my lfs and he doesn't seem to have the barbs or what not? it is brown with white spots and a white tip on his tail fin. He is very active and is all over the tank throughout the day.

How big is it? As dgun said, females do not grow the big sprouts of their nose. However it could also be an immature male if its really small.
Someone with more experience with these guys might need to correct me on this, but, as far as I know, they normally have their bristles at this size.

Its gonna be a bit longer till yours gets the bristles. MIne was around 2-3 inches when they started to grow. If not much grows its probly a female.

LOL Oops.alright, i wasn't sure if i had another common on my hands and was worried since i have one that has to be approaching 7-8" and he only has a 55 to live in. i couldn't very well have two!

I love the massive commens. My sister has one thats about a foot now. Hes in a 135 and possibly going into her 180 if she converts it to freshwater (its salt now).
