:nilly:so im about to start up a salt tank in the next few days and well when i went to my LFS to look at live rock they had some of these worms in one of the live rock tanks. are they ok to have or will they take over and start killing things. or what is the best way to get rid of them. they told me they are ok in a tank but they dont look like they are tank freindly. thanks

what do they look like? do they have "hairs" on the sides of them?... if they are bistle worms you can get thing that eat them (somthing like a arrow crab) or you can set out traps, i personally have no experience with them but i hear placeing a piece of seafood in a nylon stocking will catch them. their bristles get caught in the stocking and they can't get out, be careful with the stocking though those hairs sting like a mo fo

yeah they do have the hairs on the sides and welll ive seen other things in the rocks that dont have hairs but they too look like worms but dont know what they are. so if they are on one rock are they on them all?

Well what do you think they say about us?
Wow they are aren't in water like we are... does that mean there are more of them out there?
You are looking to purchase a piece of rock that was in the ocean. The ocean is their environment and the rock is their home. They can only live in a rock that is porous enough for them to fit themselves into. Some rock they can be in... some they cannot.
Are they bad for your tank... for the most part... no. Can they be... they can be somewhat like a bulldozer and move things around when they get larger. Meaning they might dislodge smaller rocks onto livestock. So they can be bad.
They are a general necessary part of the food chain in the ocean. They sift the sand and eat detritus (basically crap in the sand).

Take it like it is. If you don't want one in your tank. Remove it.

down the road, you will more then likely get them in your tank. I wouldnt NOT get live rock because of them. In fact i like them, but there is a downside. If you tank is very dirty and almost never cleaned, they can re produce often and eventually cause an outbreak in brisstle worms. That sucks and its very hard getting them out and keeping up on the population.

My method is once a month for 5 days ill put in the worm trap, Generally a green tube that you place some food in. They crawl in and you dump on the dirt outside and let them die, and become part of you grass lol. this will keep up on the population but at the same time wont be so tedious that eventually you dont want to do it anymore.

It's easier to put a shrimp in a nylon stocking.... put it in your tank. When they smell the shrimp, they go investigate and get stuck in the stocking.... tada!!!
Pull out stocking and throw out the worms at the same time.
