Just wondering if a bristlenose would be ok to house with my hystrix. I have a little algae, not a huge problem but don't want it to get out of control and I have heard that these things are algae machines!

sadly there is no need for a pleco because you can just scrub the algae off and there bio load is just unnecessary.I have kept bristle nose with my rays now for over 5 years with never an incident...... but maybe I am just lucky
You can keep them together but be careful that the bristle does not rasp the rays slime coat off, you can tell when this is happening due to the dull surface marks on top of the ray.
Scrub it off with your two hands and don't bother putting your ray at risk. That is what I would do / do anyway.
why take the risk? the bristelnoses wont clean all the alge and they increase your bio load.. not worth it
It will take you 5-10 minutes tops, ray keepers tend to put a nice chunk of change into their rays so why risk it?
