I was just checking to see if anyone could help me out. I want to try and breed some bristlenose cats and was wantinting to know it you breed albinos if you always get albino fry? Also is there only one type of this fish sold at lfs or is there lots of them that all look the same. I have done some research and these are the questions I still have.

Thanks
Jason

If you mean bristle nose pleco they aren't that hard to breed. Most of the people that I know that breed them always get what ever color they breed. Like if they breed the commons they are always green and if they breed the albinos they always get albinos. That is because the parents are the same type. Regular to regular and albino to albino. The only way that you would get mixed fry is if one on the parents has and albino gene or regular gene.

:iagree: to some extent...there are different species of bristlenose that have an albino variant. there are 2 that I was told about...one is more an orangish color while the other is a much lighter color that is more pinkish. the pinkish will always throw brown and albino fry whereas the orange, if not at some point bred to a regular, will always throw all albino fry. however if the latter species has been crossed to a brown bristlenose then it will throw mostly brown fry with a few albinos. this is what I was told anyway by a couple of different breeders in Cincinnati. the best thing to do is get several juveniles, put them in their own tank (20 long will do fine) grow them up and feed them very well. as they get bigger remove all but one male and wait for him to pick a female. once he picks a female keep the pair in the tank and remove the others and they should spawn with little problems. just make sure to have some type of caves for them and a bare bottom is fine and even preferred by many breeders. :)

you could probably even spawn them in a 10 or 15 gallon just keep a very close eye on the water parameters. personally I'd opt for the 20 long though.

Thanks for all the info. Im going out tonight to get some or atleast look at them and the prices. Im excited to breed some thing new to me and will keep you all informed on how its going.

Thanks
Jason
