Hi! I have a 3" BN that I have had for around three months now and it behaves perfectly healthy. I have on many occasions seen this plec in varrying colors. Lighter strips accross is back etc... It's not morning/night/feeding time it's somewhat random. (and no, it's not just when in the presence of the vampire) :)

Any other pleco lovers experience this?

Does anyone know what the possible cause might be or if it's a sign of something I need to be concerned about?

Like most fish, Ancistrus have different colors for different moods. I have seen non-spawning Ancistrus show this coloration while in the same tank as a pair of Ancistrus were spawning. I believe it to be a stress pattern. I would imagine being in the tank with an agressive Leporacanthicus would be stressful for him or he would show this coloration while being near the Leporacanthicus.

Thanks Fantasticfins!

It's an odd relationship between the two as neither have ever displayed any signs of aggession. I have read that the vampire will become more and more aggressive as it ages.

The BN is very well fed and the water perams are great so I think your right, it's probably stress. Any suggestions I can do assist with the stress load besides the obvious removing him? I am setting up a 125 for the vampire but it will not be ready for at least six months ($$$). There are a few different of hiding places in the tank... Take a look and see if you disagree. Thanks again!
