Everytime I buy a broadleaf amazon swordplant, the broadleaves die off and are replaced by newly grown narrow leaves, and then the plant thrives. Anyone have a similar experience or know what causes this?

No one has experienced this? It has happened to me approx seven times.

yes it is very common with sword plants. its emerged growth die back. swords grow two different leafs. one for growing out of water and one for in water. they are grown much easier out of water at the farms. when you get them into a tank, they need to change over so the leaves melt away and the submerged form grows in. nothing to worry about and happens to pretty much every sword.

exact same thing happens with my swords, I grow my own now, same thing happens to all the sprouts as well. Outer leaves rot and fall off and bright new ones grow in the middle.
I dunno... but I think they may broaden out over a period of time, or is it just the first sprouts that are broad? I have both types of swords and broad one sprouts broad sprouts.

Glad to hear I am not the only one who has this problem.

Far from it. it happens to almost every sword you will buy fromt he LFS. some plat wholesalers will sell submerged plants but most sell emerged cause they are simply easier to grow. want something fun to do..convert your sword plant over to a house plant. they live just fine out of water.

I never knew that. If I get excess swords, I will try it. Do they need sunlight, or will artificial suffice?

Any light will do. Heck, most swords in tanks are under fluoros, right? As with any plant, natural sunlight or Metal Halide greatly improves growth.

But yeah, everyone pretty much summed up the mystery of the dying leaves for you. Plant growers grow plants emerged and even hydroponically to speed it up.
