My Magnum 350 filter broke down about 3 weeks ago so i moved my fish into another tank. I just replaced my filter this week. The water in my 55 gallon tank has been just sitting there over the last 3 weeks. I just made a 50% water change 3 days ago when i hooked up the new filter. How long before I can put my fish back into the tank?

You need to cycle the filter. Put some old/dirty media in it to jump start it. You can also clean your existing filter (saving the water) and then pour that water through the new filter.

I personally would have just bought the same filter if u liked it.( i have the same one.. its ok.) and just switch out the insides keep an eye for your levels nitrates and such and u shouldnt have done a water change in my oppinion but its too late now... all you can do is wait... again witch is the worst part about this hobbie:( good luck:)

3 week stagnant water? POISON!...

I'd brake it all down and clean it really good and start over with a new filter and clean tank and some Seachem "Stability" as per the instructions on the label...

Well yeah I wouldnt leave it sitting there too long eather... ha should have just bought the new filter asap:)

I agree with what Zenn Said clean the tank and drain all the water you are risking losing all your fish otherwise. when you do water changes on the other tanks drain it into this tank this should also add some BB. When you clean the filters in the other tanks if you can take some of the filter media and use it in this tank as well as using a product like Seachems "stability" then introduce your fish back slowly so as not to overdue your filter ability to deal with the Ammonia levels and you should be great imo

Yup...if anything at all, dump out the polluted water you got sitting there for 3 weeks...Didn't the smell, give you a clue? Anytime water smells like that and is thick like that it's NO good!

No disrespect intended, but most of the time, if it looks and smells good enough to drink, it is likely to be OK for your fish...

After 3 weeks your'e starting all over again. If I were in your shoes I would probably run the new filter on the tank with the most fish in it for about a week. Thouroughly clean the other tank and set it up the way I wanted. Then add some bio spira or a like product, transfer the filter to its intended tank and slowly add the fish back until everyone where they were supposed to be over the course of the next week or so. keeping an eye on water parameters.

Whenever I buy a new filter for a tank i am setting up I do it this way.
