I posted a thread a while ago saying I got a used Fx5, and that I needed an O-ring and one of those screw clamp things for the lid. It was working great for about 3 months... until now. I went to do my weekly tank maintenance today, and noticed my FX5 was silent and not moving any water. I cleaned it out about 3 weeks ago and was working fine since then.... One of the screw-clamps broke again. The lid is warped so much that it can't maintain a seal, and the motor doesn't even turn on anymore. All at once. What the hell happened? How does it just break like that when it hasn't been touched in 3 weeks, and it was working last Saturday for sure, and probably longer than that fine too.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I took it all apart, cleaned it all, put it back together and used some pliers to screw the lid back down for the one broken clamp (not very tightly) and nothing happens. No leak, no motor, nothing.

Took it all apart as in took the motor off as well? I once got a piece of gravel in the impeller and it did the same thing. Just wouldn't turn on...

I was unaware this was accessible. How would I get to that part?

I don't have it anymore so I can't tell you exactly. But there should be 4-5 screws around the pump housing. Just unscrew them and the whole pump should come off. Then you can get to the impeller. Take the impeller out and clean out the shaft where it fits with a q-tip and some water to flush out any debris. Be careful not to damage the o-ring. Hopefully that will solve your issue.

You are the man. I got it working! There was tons of small black rocks in there. They must have come from the previous owner, because I have brown PFS. I guess they have been in there all along, but managed to get wedged in, in JUST the right way.

By the way, what type of fish is your avatar? It looks like a Bifasciatus? It looks amazing!

I was told it was a synspilum when I got him and 3 females. But I leaned more towards bifa. I no longer have him though. He was a total beast, almost 14"

Yeah. He does have the right colored areas (red face, blue back, yellow hind end) to be a Syn, but they don't have the freckled faces like that. That fish is awesome.

Thanks again! :)
