hello all, i just rescued a tigershovelnose catfish and i notice that it's nose is different to the ones that i used to keep?

what i mean is, the nose seems to be bend? the ones that i used to keep are stright like a real "shovel". but this TSN that i just rescued has a nose like an eagle?

any idea? is it because it's been damage in when it was younger?
will it affect its feeding? will it be more hook" as it get older?
or is it something to do with its genes?

any comments welcome :)

Im pretty shure its from ramming there nose on the side of the tank, I dont think it will affect them feeding at all but it depends on how bad it is.

I have one, too.

He was like this when I got him, I had to ask MFK what was wrong with him - broken nose was the verdict. He seems fine, very active and eats anything I put in the tank. I think he's actually kind of cute :)

The photos don't show the nose very well, but they're all I have.

Yours actually looks more like a deformation than a broken nose... there are a few of those in MFK, Necrocanis should chime in about this but it's My opinion that yours is deformed and was born like that, it will get worse as it grows... but overall it shouldn't affect them at all..

As for the OP I can't see the pic... but deformed TSN's are common, but broken noses are also extremly common in TSN's. Most of this is resulting back from the captive breeding in asia where they are mass producing these fish and not properly culling them (all about the dollar) and inbreeding them because they arn't keeping track of siblings, family lines and such.... it's a real shame ... but you have to love their dopey look :D

I had initially thought it was a birth defect, but it seems like it could be a broken nose... I'm not sure how you could know for sure.

The only problem he has is that he seems to scrape up his lower lip fairly often - other than that he seems very happy. I do love his dopey look, he's "special". :)
