i know dis is kind of off topic, but does any 1 know if the little black balls inside the bottom of the thermometer is harmful to the tank or fishes? thanks in advanced.

No, I don't think they are harmful in freshwater tanks.

I think they are just little steel ball-bearing like things to weigh the bottom so the theremometer stays upright.

Yeah they are remove them and broken parts of the thermeter! They contain mercury!!!

They are not mercury. Mercury is liquid like, the little balls he is talking about are steel. Theremometers do not have mercury in them anymore, it's colored alcohol.

Depends on the age of the thermometer. Companies used to place lead shot in those self-orienting floating thermometers. About 15 years ago, they changed to steel shot.

right on brotha!!.. it's the glass that is a danger , broken bit's all around and possibly a jaged peice in the rubber still sticking out waiting to spear a fish :WHOA: that the stuff nightmare's are made of..:grinyes:

same thing happend to me , over the winter my t.s.n freaked out and bounced about the tank and slamed in to the thermoeter and smash!!! , glass very were :(

good luck picking up the little steel ball's :naughty: it'll make you wanna scream every curse word known to man kind ..

I used small bit's of duck tape ( I know bad move but what you goin to do!?) and did a nice water change after it all.. again good luck

If iron or steel they will rust and make an ugly mark, if lead they are slightly toxic in acidic water and somewhat toxic if eaten by the fish. Try a magnet and if they are iron or steel they will come right up. Otherwise just scoop them out with a spoon.
