Oregon, it's part of 'Murica!
What the best way to get rid of brown algae? I was thinking of getting a 6-8" pleco because the last one I had did a good job at control. I would get a larger rubber/bristlenose but can't any larger than 2". I have an 9" oscar in the tank so I don't want anything he could eat and kill himself. Are they nonplated catfish that are good at eating algae?

Reduce feeding, increase lighting. If your nitrates are high, or you have high silicates (new tank, or recently re-sealed, using sand as a substrate) these will cause brown algae. From my understanding, if you increase lighting it will help decrease diatoms (brown algae.)
