brown algae?

My 125 that I setup about 1 month ago is starting to develop some brown algae on the glass and equipment(heaters, filter intake, etc). I did have a 55 gal that was setup in the same spot and also had the brown algae.

The tank does not get direct sunlight from a nearby window(approx. 6 ft away). I have a tank on the other side of the window that is closer but does not grow the brown algae, BTW the window faces north.

Long story short, how can I get rid of the brown algae? other than using my magnet cleaner.

I have a few live plants, like 4 java ferns but they are small and really can't compete with the algae.

Your water may be high in silicates. Diatoms tend to thrive in water high in silicates. They will go away usually with brighter lighting aside from scrubbing them out.

If you can't stop whats causing it you could always get a bushy nose pleco, max size 5". They do a great job of cleaning, even brown.

I'm assuming an albino BN would do the same as a regular BN. I have a Hypostomus in their now but he/she won't touch nor will the MTS.

I had some in my 150. it is in the basement so i thought it was regular algae. Bought a pleco and in one day had whole tank clean except for the half my festae was on.

My albino BN did. I bought it and the diatoms disappeared.

snails love the stuff..


however... never get a fish or snail to take care of your tank.. its your tank which means its your job

your tank is only a month old so i wouldnt worry about it too much just keep an eye on it and it should work itself out.

I am no rookie when it comes to water chemistry and WC so don't worry about my ability to do so. I've had brown algae before, just not this bad, this quick. Thanks for the snail tip WINK, WINK although I should NEVER get any to do my job for me.

Yeah, they are the same. If you have never had them, their amazing! I have MTS too, they eat algae but they are so small and slow they never get all the algae all you see is small streaks that they have eaten. They are better keeping the bottom and substrate clean.
