I was trying for months to get porthos to grow on my tank and I was finally successful with help from people on this forum. It is growing like a weed right now and the reason is that I have added a lot of light. I have two lights that are focused on the porthos and leave it on from about 9:30am to 8:30pm. Porthos is doing great, but so is the brown algae now. Just wondering if there is any way to combat this? Right now I scrub the algae clean once a week when I do my water changes, but it is a pain.

I know people with well planted tanks normally dont have to worry about algae because the plants absorb all the nutrients. Will the porthos grow to the point where algae won't be a problem?

Thanks!

Are you overfeeding? And is it by the window by chance? A picture would help.

Also its called Pothos! But close enough. You can always consult the sticky below for faster responses!

Could be light cycle, overfeeding, Bio load, etc.

Is the Pothos on the top of the tank? Brown loves low light conditions which could be the case if the plants are blocking light into the tank.

I've also noticed that brown algae likes hotter temp for some reason.

The tank has been up since December, and the pothos has been in there for 3+ months. The pothos is on top of the tank. The tank is near the window, but the curtains are closed. I have reduced the light from 11hrs a day to 8hrs a day and will see how that works. It could also be the water temp as the water is around 80-82 degrees (temp in my house keeps the water that warm)

Doubt it is over feeding as I have a single rhom and 1 tetra. The rhom eats about 1 once every 5 days, and the tetra is pretty much every day. Maybe I can get some snails.

Wow love the simplicity of your setup. However I'd move the fx5 output to the middle of the tank with one output aimed toward the pothos roots & the other pointed towards the filter intake and adjust your PH toward the intake so your rhom can better utilize the current and your filtration will be more efficient. Other then that a back round may help, even poster board works and is cheap!

Love it!

Thanks F1 Vet. My rhom likes to move around so I dont like to put to much stuff in there to get in his way. I have had him for 14 years and when I first got him I had plants in the tank and all he used to do was shred them. I have been thinking of adding a black background but he used to hate backgrounds, but I could try it again.

Thanks for the tip on the filter and PH. I will give it a try.

14 years is some seriously awesome dedication! And I'm sure he will love the extra current.
