I started getting a brown alge covering my glass on one of my tanks, I wipe it down and it still comes back. I have had the tank running for probably 6+ months and am confused as to what changed...all water peramiter are the same. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas.

im having the same problem. my bithynia snail dont do crap, so im getting an ottocinclus affinis
once i scrape it off, my whte cloud minnows occasionally eat it

Try to cut back on how much you are feeding your fish. How big is your tank, what do you have for filtration and what is your stock.

The tanks only a 23 gallon with 12 small tropicals that the kids picked out. There are 2 tetra care filter that are currently in the tank. I can't remember the exact # but I do know they gave me like 80 gallons worth of filtering. I read somewher that a lack of light may cause it to grow also.....I did subdue my light to get an effect that I wanted. I will put a new bulb in when I go to the LFS again and see if that helps. It doesn't seem to do any harm even when my fish eat it, it just looks nasty.

May I know what fish you have there? Insufficient lighting, excess silicates and poor water conditions often are the causes of diatoms. What is your water change routine?

I get the same problem. I have ruled out the obvious reasons, made adjustments and still get soem brown algae. I began to think it could be excess silicates and phosphates in my water, so I bought some phospure and added it to my filter and it clears it up a little. You can try a phosphate pad to see if it removes those extra nutrients in your water.
