This tank is about a month and a half old, it has one female guppy and about 10 guppy fry in it. I just noticed that there is like brown spots on the bottom of the tank and also in a couple of the shells that are in there. I don't think it's brown algae because I have the lights on about 12 hours a day. Any ideas?

Definitely brown algae.

it will always come back you just got to keep doing wc and cleaning the sides. My tank does the same thing. Its from your nitrates getting to high.

Brown algae or diatoms are fairly common in new tanks. Its a result of the extra silica from the new tank and unstable water parameters. It will go away on its own when the tank gets established.

All of my tanks get brown algae because they are in my basement. It's warm and the humidity is high- and there's no natural sunlight.

My upstairs tanks are green.

My cichlid tank gets brown algae and my community gets green. Both are exposed to the sun for about an hour a day.

Ok, sounds good. Ya, my community tank doesn't have any brown algae. I will clean this up then shell-dwellers are going into this tank.
