The title say most of it. I'm very close to picking up a really unique 55 gallon aquarium. It is essentially 2 25 gallons joined together with 2 medium diameter tubes for fish to swim through. Seeing the pass-through tubes really made me want to get a knife fish, but I'm pretty sure a brown knife would be the only one I could keep in there for a decent amount of time.

I guess my questions to you knife fish pros are
1. Will my full grown, senegal bichir bother a brown knife? (the only time I've ever seen him attack a fish his size was when he accidentally bit my pleco when he was going for a carnivore pellet)

2. Will a brown knife be happy (at least for a while) in a tank set-up like this?

And if there's anything else I should know about brown knife care, I would appreciate any and all input.

Thanks,
John

To the first question: The knife will have to be at least 3/4 the size of the bichir. My ropes ( all about 1 foot) or my sen ( 8" ) killed a 4" green knife I tryed to add to my tank. But if the knife is big enough it won't have a problem ;)

Im not too familiar with brown knifes, but I think a 25-30gal tank would be too small, even if its 2 of them coonected with a pipe. Sounds likean interesting tank design though, can u post a pic of the tank?

Hope that works. I really want to go grab this tank. I actually got the OK from my better half. Told her she owed me since she let my catfish eat my pike while I was out of town.

Isn't it a strange tank? I want it so bad!

Also, thanks Chub. I'll make sure that if I progress with this tank, I'll look for a knife that's at least 6"

The only problem with this setup is you HAVE to siphon both areas. I owned one of these. Even though its 1 tank, both sides will have fish and both will accumulate fish dung. The crap on the bottom wont go away from changing just one side. Anyways, happy fishkeeping!!

That's a pretty cool tank. As far as keeping the knife and bichir together...I actually have a brown knife and a bichir in the same tank. They are perfectly fine and have been in there together for a long time. As mentioned...just don't get one that's too small.
