Brown on mangroves

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I want to say yes (mine are brown at the bottom) but be careful what kind of water you keep them in. Fresh would be a good start. Suspend them in the water until they grow roots (it will be painfully slow!) and keep up on the vitamins. Do you know what kind of mangrove it is? A pic would also be nice. As for mangrove care, google is your best friend. You can also look in either mine or Maxx's threads for an article posted by Joe Jaskot. (sp?).

Oh and if they get wrinkly and limp, that's a sign of shock and imminent death. So if any of the mangroves you've found are wrinkly, leave them. They are on their way out. You can bring them back but it takes time and dedication. I thought one of my red mangroves was a goner for sure for a bit.

They're reds and I was planning on keeping them in freshwater. I'll get some pictures up. Also toward the back of the beach there are a ton of beams some of which are growing roots and leaves that I took. I figured since the tide rarely reaches them and they are still growing that they must be using the rainwater. Would this make them compatible to freshwater?

Red mangroves are always compatible with freshwater. I've read that if you're keeping them in full salt it wouldn't be a bad idea to give them a 15-20 minute freshwater bath once or twice a month. The first three are upside-down, lol. Yes, they look perfectly healthy to me. bury them in a planter brown side-down and they will be fine. Keep up on your magnesium and iron supplements. The bottom two are beauties. Nice finds! Keep them wet! lol

A note: One site I read said that if you planted them right away in gravel, they wouldn't necessarily develop their infamous prop-roots. The prop roots are developed from the tides on the shore where they are indigenous. Keep that in mind if you want them or not. I'm just letting mine go crazy in their planters. Um, for aquarium planters, check out ripariumsupply.com, he's a good guy out of Madison WI. He'll hook you up with what you need. Both Maxx and I have planters from him, if you wanna see em in action. Good luck!
