Because your hook is huge, thick and plated. Fine wire hooks actually have a chance to be dissolved naturally by fish in the wild but plated hooks are bad.

Freeze the fish please.

On the side...trout require special care generally speaking. You have to be pretty determined if you want to keep them long term. I'd suggest keeping natives for several years while studying their requirements before killing anymore.

Oh wait....Brown trout? take as many legal fish as you want since these aren't even a fish native to the USA.

oh..
don't some places stock rivers with browns??

I don’t know about the legality, but the brown trout was introduced to North American back in 1883. Most places do stock them several times a year. They were originally natives of Europe and western Asia, now they are farm-raised in the USA.

Keep the trout in there.
Keep the Bass in there.

Who knows, the trout may not survive, but it has a chance.
Just see where it goes.

I'd just wait it out and see what happens. I know my dads fish swallowed a 2 inch glow stick one night that my little brother threw in the tank and he was glowing all night and we were freaking out. But in the morning the glow stick was floating at the top of the tank. I'd imagine if the hook somehow loosened up in his throat he'd spit it right out. Every time I go fishing and lose a hook down a fishes throat I try to get them with needle nose forever and somehow the fish always ends up spitting out the hook.

If you don't want to see how it turns out just let him go back into the wild.

If all else fails cook him, trouts is good eating haha.

There are all kinds of species of trout in Michigan.. I always just thought they were native here.

Master Zero you have inspired me to keep trout as pets now.

Just a reminder......Trout need tons of space (much more than bass twice their size), clean and cool water. Give Zero a few weeks and see if you're still "inspired" to keep trout.

The legallity of keeping brown trout is on a state by state basis, check your local rules. Usually, privately stocked ponds don't follow the same rules. They aren't illegal to Keep in NNY where I live and I can actually buy them for stocking.

You live in NY, you should be able to keep the Gamefish as long as you have a valid fishing license and caught it with rod-n-reel. You can keep your daily limit; this is something that the DEC has never made clear to me, if the licences expires and I don't get a new one, am I supposed to kill it? Killing it and tossing it in the garden is never illegal as long as the Gamefish is legal size, but some states still may not let you keep them alive. Thats just plain crazy.
