I have a beautiful piece of driftwood that I bought from my LFS a few months ago and I have Java Ferm growing on it very well. The problem is that since I have introduced it to my tank, the water has a brown tint which I attribute to the driftwood. Is there any way of removing or reducing the "teabag" effect? Thanks

it is just leeching tannin. It is actually very healthy for your fish. If you do not like the water color though, you can soak it till it stop leeching. This takes some time though.

Thanks. I figured. I really dont mind too much. I have a heavily planted tank and the darker water gives it a very natural look. Was just worrried about the water quality. As long as it doesnt hurt the fish. Thanks again!

You could try running carbon in you filter, but that likely won't remove all of it.

If possible, boil you drift wood. I've had a lot of luck with boiling drift wood in the past. I found I had a lot less tannins in the water (less coloring in the water) after boiling it.

I had some driftwood that took about a year before it stop turning my tank brown I just did heavy water changes and didn't worry about it.

yeah, mine took several months and big weekly water changes before it finally cleared. looks bad, but good for the fish. no worries.

Tannins & soft water are beneficial for some fish, but he didn't specifically say what species of fish he is keeping. It is certainly bad for african cichlids from the lakes, for example.

If carbon isn't enough, purigen works really well for clearing tannins and other DOCs.
