At last, the magical 6lb barrier has been broken with this enormous record-breaking 6lb 2oz River Thames perch caught by Robert Townsend, from Banstead in Surrey.
Witnessed and weighed in a plastic bag, using Fox Digital scales, this perch has potentially smashed the previous record of 5lb 15oz, held by Les Brown.
This is the first-ever time that a running water venue has thrown up a perch that has the statistics to break the record.
It was caught on a gudgeon livebait, floatfished within a London marina while Robert and friend, Martin Edmonds were taking a newly purchased 14ft boat for a trial.
"I assumed Martin was going to glove the fish, like all the other pike, and then I saw him grab the net, shouting something about a big perch," explained Robert.
"I've caught carp to over 37lb, but I'd never seen anything like this perch - I was in awe of it," added Martin.
