I purchased a gorgeous rose bubble tip anemone and an even more beautiful yellow stripe maroon clown fish... the blacks and dark reds and lighter reds in the fins and the yellows its gorgeous... all for 87.97 or something crazy cheap
well anyways it was live caught and I already had a smaller run of the mill tank raised maroon clownfish... well.. the bubble came attached firmly on a rock... well.. ofcourse its moved since than.. being a bubbletip..
well the tank raised boring clown really had no idea what the thing was.. but the yellow stripe was allllll about it..
long story short I feel like the clownfish is hosting the anemone toooo hard its mouth is open and it just doesn't seem tooo happy.. and I feel like its trying get away..
I even covered the anemone with a fishnet... and allll the clowns do is try to get in or move the net and they totally have moved the net..
well the anemone has moved several times and the clowns just keeping hosting it to death..
is that possible?
or no?
leave it move the clowns?
should I... do what..
should ...
well.. help?
ps..
tank levels are good good amount of flow..
and its in a tank with a 400 watt 20k bulb full of softs lps sps... .. 75 gallons 20 gall fuge and 30 gallon refugium..
ideas?

Maroons have been known to host anemones to death. What you could do is to either move the clown or put a basket over the anemone until it settle in. Some maroons are just to overly anemone crazy.
Hope everything works out for you, rose anemones are one of my favorites.

so that really is a real issue.... as far as it hosting the anemone to death..
I just can't believe that they moved the net..
do I just let the anemone rest for like.. a week or so and than toss the clowns back in...
I just don't want the dang thing to hide all the time now ... Ive had one hide to death sadly.

Your best bet is to let the anemone settle in for a couple of weeks then put the clowns back in, hopefully the anemone will find its spot and adjust to your tank enough so when the clowns return they won't host it to death.

As long as the other parameters in the aquarium are good, and there are no other animals bothering the anemone (peppermint shrimp, other stinging cnidarians) it should settle down.

This is a real issue, especially if there is a large descrepency between the size of the clown and the anemone. The anemone needs to be bigger than the clown, especially with the aggressive hosters. GL

well the clown is definately smaller than the anemone..
I think part of the issue was the two clowns were fighting over the anem.
I finally managed to catch the larger wild caught one that was the hardest on it..
I tried covering it with two nets and a scraper and they actually managed to move a net to get to it..
its being left alone now but its stressed out pretty good
its mouth is open and I don't like that one bit....
thoughts ideas?
its stationary right now stuck really good in a high light medium flow area on a rock but like i said the mouth is hanging open...
and I know thats a bad sign.

are you feeding your nem regularily/properly? as if your not it will take longer to recover from stress, also good feedings will let it grow faster to a larger size, alowing it to handle the more agressive hosts.

From what I understand, bubble tips enjoy silversides on a pretty regular basis. Just administer them with tongs, and make sure the fish arent too big as it will cause digestive issues.

+1...really anything meaty. Try different things, they might reject some and keep others. Fed krill, market shrimp, silversides...whatever.

Also keep the clows away until the nem has the food all the way in its mouth. Clowsn esp larger more aggresive ones have been known to steal food from nems and starve/injure them to death.

On the other hand I have had clowns feed nems and other corals they were hosting in.

well the first night I put him in there with the clowns I saw the clown feed him.. but he than proceded to beat the nem into submission.
I've tried feeding market shrimp and a squirt of brine shrimp for kicks and giggles twice I'll try siversides tomorrow
he's in a good higherflow area now its a more.. crevice type spot so I'm hoping he'll perk up he's swelled back up mouths a tad tighter so thats a good thing.
I'll keep you posted add a few pics its a beauty though and my yellow stripe maroon is even prettier
