new windsor/cormwall, ny
tons of bubbles!

so my 72g BF discus tank now looks like bettas made bubble nests! covers 80% of surface. have 2-AC110 running + sponge filter & an air stone all making tons of water flow action & bubbles. only have discus in the tank

is it because the water is saturated with air/O2 or something else?

Howdy,

Sounds more like you've got a water issue. Have you tried a water change?

yeah I would definitely try a WC... When bubbles actually stay at the surface it is usually an indicator to me that there could be a film of something oily or whatever. Just my $0.02

Did you add Melafix?

I thought maybe a film coating also - but don't see any. No melafix. I had been using jungle clear but do w/c daily - 20-50% for 72g BF tank. when I feed flakes it sort of clears it up. but after food if finished the bubbles bubble up again.

I have been feeding frozen brine & bloodworms, - maybe the juices when they thaw out in the water? but any leftovers gets filtered out.

I do have a lot of water agitation & each unit produces tons of bubbles.

what other water issues can I have.

correction: I did treat with melafix + pimafix 3wks ago but this bubbling action just surfaced last week so would think with w/c it's all gone. + didn't bubble up when I was treating.

That's my main suspect. In general, you should defrost food outside the tank, decant or use a strainer to discard any liquid, and only feed remaining solids.

The fact that flake food "cures" the problem is a strong indicator of surface-active pollutants, and protein-based food juices would fit that description.

thks, makes a lot of sense now.

so when I did a 50% w/c 2nites ago, at same time I was vac-ing I used the tube to semi-suck just below the surface to suck in the bubbles (again I could not see any noticeable film).

after that & just feeding flakes, the bubbling has dissipated significantly, still have some(i'd say about 10%) but not whole surface!

I wasn't ready to buy a protein skimmer, so will try this method again to see if I can further reduce & control going forward.

thks all.
