Bubbles om sump?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The only tanks I have air in are the ones that use undergravel filters that I haven't bought power heads for yet.

Air can be used to move water and for gas exchange. However, if you already have a sump, you have plenty of air to water contact and movement. IMO this would make any bubbler in a sump worthless.

Absolutely ...Yes.

It helps oxygenate the the water / bacteria and multiplies the gas exchange rate by an order of magnitude.

if your putting them directly under the pot scrubbies where the bubbles will rise and pop inside the scrubbie section works very well, i have a bubbler below my scrubbies, i can't post any results but i do know i have never had a mini cycle or high ammo levels ,and have had the tank shut down for more then a couple of hours sometimes, but just watching the bubbles hitting the scrubbies and knowing the bacteria thrives off of wet/dry was enough to make me keep it in there..

Edit: also wanted to add only reason i did add a bubbler down there is i have 3in x 20in of scrubbies that are sumerged, and have about 5inx20 that are not sumerged, i knew the ones that were not sumerged would get the air from the drip plates..but the ones that were sumerged i wanted to get the most out of them so thats why i added the bubbler only to take care of any mediea that is sumerged...

In a wet dry filter some of the media is suppose to be submerged in water. A different kind of bio colony inhabits this area.

Look at the sumps you buy, do you ever see one with a bubbler?

just on FYI that second post in the link was mine and yes i have the bubbles comming right up through my media, as my sump is a wet sump this is my way of having better gas exchange for the lower media to promote better BB growth.
i would not say that this is 100% needed as i have seen so many wet/drys that work great and do not have air pumps in them, but again mine is a wet sump as my water does not drip through my media, i added air to the water to get the same sort of effect

:iagree:
Aeration in a sump also helps to remove dead spots that may occur through channelling

Yall don't have bubbles making it back to the pump and in to the tank. That would worry me. If all my bio media was under water I might would think about doing that. But just some of it...I dont know...micro bubbles in the tank erk me. Altho I have yet to have a sump on a freshwater tank. Most of my tanks have been salt..and the water is denser so the bubbles are smaller and float around more. Maybe fresh isnt as bad....
