When I use air stones several little bubbles group together and stick around for a bit before they pop. Bigger bubbles kinda do the same thing but pop sooner. Is there something on the surface on the water that could cause this? My nitrite and ammonia is a 0. There’s no dead fish and I’ve done some water changes. When I fill a bucket of tap water and blow in it with an air stone the bubbles pop instantly. I do use api stress coat and thought maybe this was it so this time I only used prime when I did water changes. Any thoughts?

Is the air stone brand new, a bit used, or very used? If it’s very used then it could be deteriorating and the bubbles sticking together is a sign of it.

I stopped using my air stones for my undergravel filter tubes because it created too many bubbles

Turn off the airation and any surface disturbance for half an hour or so, look and see if there's an oily protein film on the surface of the water. I bet there is.

Ok I’ll try that tomorrow and see

What should I do about it if there is a layer of stuff on top?

Ok so turned off my air pumps and let it sit for 1 hour. Didn’t see a film looks crystal clear. I took paper towels and ran them on the surface to see if they do anything but no change. Just did a water change yesterday to add. Would a surface skimmer make a difference? Should I add more filtration to the tank?

Ok, in that case i suggest you turn everything back on and forget about it. Sounds like you're creating issues that don't exist for you to worry about. :)
