I have had aquariums for over 20 years and has rarely used a air pump, airstone internal sponge filter to supply Oxygen in the water. My main issue is I just dont care about seeing the bubbles in the tanks. I have always had very good filteration. I usually run 2 or 3 filters and above average on the gph, mainly depending on the tank size and the capacity. I guess my main concern I recently have set up a 55g of very young juvinile EBJD and BGJD. I have read from a breeder that he uses mainly sponge filters on his tanks. Mainy due to cost, since he has a lot of tanks. (thats also on his adult tanks. I have 8 3/4 inch JD's and am going to move the 3 EBJD in a week or 2. I guess my main question do I need added oxygen in the tank. My filteration is a Emperor 400, a large DIY canister with a 396 gph pump and a 211 GPH UV. Here is a link to my setup. And of course no bubbles. http://www.etnac.com/jack.htm

Also if the UV has a venturi air attachment that can add oxygen to the water if you all think that would be a good idea. thanks

Well, running sponge filters isnt really about the bubbles or oxygen, Sponge filters are just low Maintenance biological filters. I can only imagine the cost of being a breeder running HOB filters. I have a few tanks that i do run sponge filters on because they are fry tanks. I've had fry sucked up HOB filters before so i prefer to avoid that. Your tank should have enough oxygen in it just from the water movement from the filters. The water from the hob should put enough oxygen into the water. If you aren't having issues with fry getting sucked into filters then i wouldn't worry about changing anything.

I checked out your set up, it looks very good. I would only add more oxygen if you had an overstocked tank. You have provided plenty of room for the fry in your aquarium and you have plenty of filtration. I wouldn't worry about a thing. added extra oxygen is never a bad thing unless you over do it.

Defienty need sponge for fry tanks. I have had community african cichlid tank in the past and found a fish before living in my HOB actually a decent size. Also found one living under my undergravel filter before. Thanks for checking the blog and added info on oxygen.

Wouldn't a sponge prefilter do the same thing?

Steve, If you have juvenile EBJD, the least of your worries is oxygen. How about, poor genetics, defects, internal parasites, infertitility in a lot of the males, and I can keep going. I am a huge Emperor 400 fan there cheap to maintain and easy to maintenance. I have one on my EBJD and Blue Gene grow out tank, as for the bubbles I have them in all my tanks because they look cool, and that's about it. Hope you found a good breeder on those EBJD they are hard to come by.

Of course it would have done the same however I had no intentions in raising any fish at that time. I did not raise any fish in the tank my tetracanthus maid sure of that.

My breeder on the EBJD has a lot of good reviews and has been raising them for years, and has been known to as one of the better breeders in the business. The EB's and the BG's are also not closely related either. I agree the on the Emperor 400 very good HOB. I also use the Emperor 280. One the issue of internal parasites I decided to get a UV Steralizer, which should help. I guess time will tell how everything will go.
