:WHOA: alright peoples, i have a shot at getting a palmas buettikoferi at 8-9" for about $40, any info on this one will help and definitly need pics. are they nocturnal like delhzi or very active like the senegales? anything will help, holla back at me!!!

:) :D ;)  :naughty: :grinno: :grinyes: :headbang2 :clap :woot:

its part of the bichir family from africa.

here are some pics of my Polypterus palmas buttikoferi. :D I've only had this one but my experience with this one is that it isn't nearly as active as my P. delhezi or P. palmas polli. I do love this bichir though and would buy another one in a heart beat. IMO I"d definitely nab that one for $40.

I snatch it up for $40 as well, pretty good price especially at the 9"mark.
IME they are pretty reclusive, but cool bichirs none the less.

You can see the big color difference when kept on blac sand (as opposed to jasons on white)

general care is same as any other bichirs. get to a max of ~13" in the wild but will take a long while in the aquarium to reach that size if ever.

as jasons and street cypher mentioned, not really an active species and mostly prefer hiding spots during the day. ime it seems on average they could be a little more picky than senegalus and palmas polli when it comes to food, but then again this really varies depending on the individuals and is hard to generalize.

they are one of my favorites. i don't have access to my pics to upload at the moment, but you can see the link for some pics of mine i posted before. they are the 3rd, 4th and 5th pic.

I've currently got 7 members of the Polypterus palmas complex. One of them is unquestionably Polypterus palmas polli, five are almost certainly Polypterus palmas buettikoferi and one is likely Polypterus palmas palmas.

In general, I'd rate the Polypterus palmas buettikoferi below Polypterus palmas polli and Polypterus senegalus in overall activity level but significantly above such great sunken log imitators as Polypterus ornatipinnis and Polypterus weeksi.

Here's a shot of one of my P. palmas buettikoferi:
